The LOGORAMA dilema

So apparently there have been much huff about this years OSCARS and the winners. Frankly I feel a need to explore the results on this post and my thoughts on them as well, especially the best Animated Short Film category. For those of you who don’t know, Logorama took the OSCARS home for best animated short, here’s what it looks like.

Now on first glance and impression, I could not believe that this was even nominated to begin with. The story was weak and the Visuals were not ground breaking either. I didn’t even for a second think that this would actually win the Oscars. So now that it has, it leaves me baffling a whole lot, how could this in anyway compare with the other nominated films, or even previous Oscar winners such as Harvie Krumpet.

But given that my anger was out of frustration and impulse, let’s also take a look at a couple of other films (actually only the ones i know) at this year’s Oscars. Well for one, everyone was hoping that AVATAR would do well including taking home best picture, but thankfully it didn’t and I’ll tell you why. While AVATAR definately deserved to take home best VFX, everyone knows that the story line was just not original and too predictable. I mean cm’on Cameron, it felt like AVATAR was gonna break into a song when that main character dud( i forgot his name) started to fly on that dragon thingy. Now I’m not saying that it’s a bad movie, it’s for sure ground breaking VFX wise but it really isn’t an important film.

I was watching the Jay Leno show when one of the guest commented the difference between AVATAR and the Hurt Locker (which won best picture). While the Hurt Locker moves at a much slower pace, a cheaper budget, it doesn’t seem to be of any competition with the AVATAR visual wise, the story isn’t extremely wild like AVATAR, but none the less it is a film that is relevanat, important to our time, and urgent to recongize the condition of the IRAQ war. Which leaves me to remember, that film making is about being relevant to our times, to be able to bring forth that message where no other medium can take due to censorship, propaganda, cultural barriers, whatever..

Now Back to LOGORAMA

While I still believe that LOGORAMA IS  visually unappealing, has probably or extremely bad content for its film and leaves you without any pay off at the end. Upon further contemplation, I must admit that amongst the other short animated films of the year, it does stand out the most, weather or not people agree with it that’s seperate. But it has caused quite abit of controversy in the air and has awaken people to realize that part of art is to from time to time again break apart from normal conventions. To reinvent, re discover and move forward.  And further more, LOGORAMA does put itself relevant to its current times and economy and does deliver that strong message and the “truth of crime” about the falling US economy. Though graphically absurd and over exaggerated to some point, but there is still a huge portion of truth in it.

Let’s see what will happen in the coming year =)
